Tattoo Aftercare with Recovery Shield
Proper aftercare is essential to ensure your tattoo heals beautifully and maintains its detail and vibrancy. Here’s how to care for your new ink using a recovery shield:
First 24 Hours
- Your artist will apply a sterile recovery shield over your fresh tattoo. This breathable, waterproof barrier protects your tattoo from bacteria, friction, and contamination.
- Leave the first shield on for 24 hours, or as advised by your artist. During this time, your tattoo may weep plasma, ink, or fluid—this is completely normal.
After 24 Hours
- Remove the Shield Carefully
- Gently peel off the recovery shield under warm running water to reduce discomfort.
- Wash your hands thoroughly before touching your tattoo.
- Clean Your Tattoo
- Use a mild, fragrance-free antibacterial soap to wash away any fluid and residue.
- Pat dry with a clean paper towel—do not rub.
- Apply a New Shield (Optional)
- You may apply a second layer of recovery shield for an additional 3–5 days.
- Make sure your tattoo is completely dry and clean before applying the new shield.
- This step helps protect the tattoo during the most critical healing phase.
Days 5–7 and Beyond
- Once you remove the final shield, continue washing your tattoo 1–2 times daily.
- Apply a thin layer of fragrance-free, alcohol-free moisturizer or tattoo-specific lotion as needed to prevent dryness.
- Avoid picking, scratching, or soaking your tattoo (no baths, swimming, or saunas) for at least 2–3 weeks.
General Tips
- Avoid direct sun exposure until fully healed.
- Do not re-bandage your tattoo unless instructed.
- Healing times vary, but most tattoos heal within 2–4 weeks.
If you notice signs of infection (excessive redness, swelling, pus, or fever), contact your artist or a healthcare professional immediately.
